Went on a crap tour organised by the hotel which cost us loads of money - never again.
We were taken to some local temples where the guides didn't speak any English and wanted a tip just to open the doors for us, then went to the Elephant Orphanage which sounds lovely - Well It's Not!
The mahouts were really cruel. They had big spears with hooked spikes at the end which they used liberally to poke the elephants with. You could tell how scared the elephants were of them because every time they went near any of the baby elephants the adults all tried to get in between them to keep them away. The mahouts just seemed to try to seperate the babies from the mothers so that the tourists could pay 200R to get their pictures taken with them. The adult males were all chained to trees with about a metre of chain and looked really distressed.
We decided to leave there early as it was such a horrible place.
