Spent the next couple of days doing our own thing which was lovely.
We went to the National Museum which was small but ok. We were followed round by a 'guide' who we told several times we didn't want but insisted on reading the (English) labels to us 'sword', 'pot' etc. We eventually managed to loose him but he was waiting by the exit and actually had the cheek to ask for a tip! I won't print Davids response to that one!
The following morning we were woken at 7am by the local school band playing outside the hotel so got up early and went for a walk up into the hills and came back via the Royal Park which was nice. It is obviously the place where young local couples come to be alone. There was a couple sitting under just about every tree. Very sweet.
In the evening we went to watch the Kandian Dancing which was really good. Lots of drumming and even some firewalking which was unexpected.
After the dancing we met Joseph, an American guy staying at our hotel who took us to a local bar which was hilarious. We were the only westerners in there and I was the only girl. We were a bit of a novelty. The bar was absolutely packed and it looked as though they were about to close at any minute. They were elbowing each other out of the way to get served and they were drinking whiskey by the half pint (with just a dash of soda). The whiskey bottle was kept inside a cage on the bar! It was a hilarious night. Everyone was really drunk but very friendly.
