Kandy, Sri Lanka 19/1/08

Went to the British Garrison Cemetary where the British forces and their families were buried when we first came to Sri Lanka. Reading the headstones was quite sad as most of those that died were young men in their late teens and early twenties and their equally young wives and their very young children and babies. It made you realise how hard and precarious life must have been in Sri Lanka back then.

The cemetary was imaculately kept by an elderly caretaker who obviously did care. He was happy to take us round and tell us the stories behind the graves, including the last man in Sri Lanka to be trampled to death by an elephant and another that was shot for treason. He also opened up the little museum that they made about the restoration of the cemetary. He also didn't ask for a tip which was unusual, so we made a donation to the cemetary fund which he seemed to prefer to a personal tip!

Had a great lunch wrapped in a banana leaf (these always seem to be good)
